ESSEN, Germany — German defense technology developer THYRA has introduced the Neptor counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) interceptor at the Euro Defence Expo 2026 in Essen. Developed to counter low-cost reconnaissance drones and high-speed one-way attack UAVs, the autonomous interceptor reaches speeds of up to 350 km/h (217 mph), providing a scalable, low-cost air defense effector designed to address the unfavorable cost-exchange ratio facing NATO and U.S. armed forces during mass drone engagements.
The Neptor platform addresses a critical operational requirement: expanding magazine depth at the tactical edge without prematurely exhausting expensive surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) such as the FIM-92 Stinger or IRIS-T against expendable aerial threats. Featuring thermal target acquisition and AI-driven autonomous terminal guidance, the lightweight drone interceptor can lock onto and defeat incoming Class 1 and Class 2 aerial threats across an operational radius of up to 24 kilometers.
THYRA presented two operational launch configurations for the platform: a man-portable single-tube launcher for mobile infantry units and maneuver forces, and a stationary, battery-maintained remote launch container. The remote launcher configuration allows concealed, pre-positioned units to remain in low-power standby mode around critical infrastructure, airfields, command posts, and ammunition depots, launching automatically or via remote operator authorization when an aerial threat is detected.
