NAS PATUXENT RIVER, Md. — The U.S. Navy has successfully conducted a milestone flight test of the “Blackbeard” air-launched, long-range hypersonic strike missile integrated onto an F/A-18E/F Super Hornet strike fighter. Executed at Naval Air Station (NAS) Patuxent River, Maryland, by Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 23 (VX-23), the flight test represents a major developmental phase in transitioning the hypersonic weapon toward Early Operational Capability (EOC) for carrier air wings (CVW).

Developed under an accelerated naval air-launched hypersonic strike program, the Blackbeard missile utilizes a solid-fuel rocket booster coupled with a scramjet cruise engine (hypersonic airbreathing propulsion) or advanced boost-glide glide body architecture to achieve speeds exceeding Mach 5. Designed for high-speed precision strike against time-critical, heavily defended land targets and surface combatants, Blackbeard expands the standoff engagement range of naval strike fighters outside enemy integrated air defense systems (IADS) and anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) envelopes.
