SEOUL, South Korea — The Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) has formally ushered in a new era of air dominance as the indigenous KAI KF-21 Boramae fighter jet enters operational service. To support the fielding of the 4.5+ generation fighter platform and lead crew conversion training, the ROKAF has officially reactivated the 156th Fighter Squadron under the 16th Fighter Wing.

The reactivation of the 156th Fighter Squadron marks a symbolic and operational milestone for South Korean air power. The unit was deactivated in 2012 following the phase-out of legacy McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom II aircraft. Operating out of its primary base structure under the 16th Fighter Wing, the reactivated squadron will focus on operational conversion, tactic refinement, and protecting the high-density north-central sector of South Korean airspace against regional airborne threats.

Developed by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), the KF-21 replaces aging legacy platforms—such as the F-4E and F-5E/F—with a low-observable, highly network-centric multirole combat aircraft. The transition to operational status validates South Korea’s standing as one of the few global defense producers capable of designing, flight-testing, and deploying an advanced supersonic fighter aircraft.

The activation of the 156th Fighter Squadron ensures a streamlined pipeline for training pilots and ground crews as serial production of the KF-21 ramps up to replace legacy ROKAF assets over the coming years.
