ST. LOUIS — Originally conceived as a long-range penetration fighter to escort Strategic Air Command (SAC) nuclear bombers deep into Soviet airspace, the McDonnell F-101 Voodoo evolved into a core all-weather air defense interceptor and tactical reconnaissance platform during the Cold War. Evolving from the experimental XF-88 prototype, the twin-engine supersonic aircraft addressed shifting military doctrine as high-altitude B-52 deployments reduced the operational requirement for fighter escorts, redirecting the airframe toward continental defense and high-speed recon missions.
The two-seat F-101B variant served as a primary interceptor for the USAF Aerospace Defense Command and the Royal Canadian Air Force (designated CF-101), fully integrated with the automated SAGE (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment) network. Armed with unguided nuclear-tipped AIR-2A Genie rockets and AIM-4 Falcon air-to-air missiles, the F-101B maintained quick-reaction alert status against strategic bomber threats. Concurrently, the unarmed RF-101A and RF-101C reconnaissance variants provided low-altitude optical coverage, flying mission sorties during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis to photograph Soviet missile installations, as well as executing low-level tactical missions during the Vietnam War.
