JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Brazilian aerospace giant Embraer is adapting its combat-proven A-29 Super Tucano light-attack aircraft to take on counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) missions. The initiative creates an airborne defensive layer designed to intercept waves of one-way attack drones before they reach high-value targets, bridging the tactical gap between ground-based point defenses and expensive, high-end fighter jets.

Addressing the severe cost-per-kill asymmetry faced by modern militaries—where multi-million-dollar fighters and air-to-air missiles are deployed against low-cost attack drones—the Super Tucano provides an affordable, long-endurance C-UAS interceptor. Embraer is currently conducting a proof-of-concept demonstration with an undisclosed nation using actual drone targets to refine the human-machine interface and engagement tactics.

FIND, FIX, AND FINISH: MISSION ARCHITECTURE

Rather than searching vast airspace independently, the A-29 receives real-time targeting data from external ground-based air-defense radars via secure datalinks. Once vectored to the threat zone, the aircraft utilizes its integrated sensors to lock onto and destroy incoming swarms.

* Target Acquisition & Tracking: Employs the L3Harris WESCAM MX-15D electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) system featuring embedded moving-target indicators and advanced video tracking to create precision firing solutions. Existing aircraft require only a software update to enable this function.
* Layered Interception Zone: Designed to engage threat swarms 50 to 200 miles out from defended assets, allowing ground-based point defenses to manage the inner 50-mile engagement ring.
