Defense electronics prime ASELSAN has formally expanded its line of air-launched precision strike weapons with the unveiling of the TOLUN-L laser-guided small-diameter bomb (SDB).
Unveiled during SAHA 2026 on May 7, 2026, the 250 lb-class munition integrates a Semi-Active Laser (SAL) seeker onto the proven INS/GNSS-guided TOLUN baseline glide body. Designed to bridge the tactical gap between static bunker-busting/standoff strikes and high-speed dynamic land/maritime target interdiction, the TOLUN-L enables tactical air platforms and uncrewed combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) to lock onto moving ground vehicles, fast attack craft, and fleeting targets illuminated by airborne or ground-based laser designators. The weapon is tailored for native multi-carriage integration across Türkiye’s next-generation uncrewed aviation inventory, including the Bayraktar AKINCI, Bayraktar KIZILELMA, TUSAŞ ANKA-III, and Bayraktar TB3.

TIMES OF DEFENCE ASSESSMENT
The introduction of the TOLUN-L laser-guided variant represents a major capability upgrade for the Turkish Armed Forces’ uncrewed strike architecture. While the baseline INS/GNSS-guided TOLUN excels at standoff counter-value or counter-force strikes against fixed coordinates (such as radar installations, air defense nodes, and command bunkers), engaging high-speed moving targets required continuous sensor updates that static GPS coordinates could not supply.
From an engineering and operational perspective, fitting a Semi-Active Laser (SAL) seeker onto a 250 lb glide body with pop-out wings transforms the TOLUN family into a dual-mode dynamic interdiction weapon—similar in combat role to the U.S. GBU-39B/B Laser SDB or GBU-53/B StormBreaker. When paired with high-altitude targeting pods (such as the ASELSAN ASELFLIR-500 or ASELFLIR-600), UCAVs like the AKINCI or ANKA-III can launch TOLUN-L from a standoff range of 50 km, laser-designate moving targets in real time, and saturate enemy convoys or littoral naval swarms. Furthermore, using quad-pack SADAK-4T smart racks allows a single aircraft to carry deep magazine payloads (up to 8–16 precision glide bombs per sortie), providing sustained close air support (CAS) without compromising stealth internal bay limits on platforms like the KIZILELMA or ANKA-III.
