Defense prime Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] has officially finalized its $3.45 billion acquisition of global Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and undersea domain specialist Ultra Maritime.

The transaction—originally agreed upon with Advent International’s Cobham Ultra in July 2026—brings Ultra Maritime’s advanced sonar systems, sonobuoys, torpedo defense mechanisms, and uncrewed subsea sensing suites under Lockheed Martin’s Rotary and Mission Systems (RMS) business unit. The strategic alignment aims to integrate Ultra Maritime’s acoustic sensor manufacturing and international naval footprint directly into Lockheed Martin’s broader surface combatant, airborne ASW (MH-60R / P-8A integration), and uncrewed autonomous undersea vehicle (AUV) architecture.

Core ASW & Subsea Sensor Product Lines

💥 Acoustic Sensing & Sonobuoys: Active/passive sonobuoys (AN/SSQ-53, AN/SSQ-62, AN/SSQ-101 family), airborne sonobuoy dispensers, and multi-static active (MSA) receiver processors
💥 Submarine & Surface Ship Sonar Arrays: Towed array sonar systems (TASS), low-frequency active (LFA) sonar, hull-mounted sonar suites, and submarine passive intercept arrays
💥 Torpedo Defense & Countermeasures: Sea Sentory surface ship torpedo defense (SSTD) systems, acoustic decoy launchers, and reactive anti-torpedo interceptor effectors
💥 Autonomous Maritime Sensing & RF: Uncrewed surface/undersea vessel acoustic payloads, low-profile radar systems, and naval electronic warfare (EW) receiver modules

Naval Platform Integration Horizons

🚀 Rotary-Wing ASW Systems: Integration of Ultra sonobuoys, processing suites, and dip sonars onto MH-60R Seahawk and AgustaWestland Merlin HM2 platforms
🚀 Fixed-Wing Maritime Patrol Integration: Sensor telemetry alignment for P-8A Poseidon long-range anti-submarine aircraft
🚀 Surface Combatant & Subsurface C2: Direct interface with Lockheed Martin Aegis Combat System, COMBATSS-21, and AN/BYG-1 submarine combat control software stacks

TIMES OF DEFENCE ASSESSMENT

Lockheed Martin’s $3.45 billion buyout of Ultra Maritime represents a consolidation of subsea sensor manufacturing within the Western defense industrial base. As adversary submarine fleets transition toward quieter propulsion systems, deep-sea endurance, and uncrewed underwater vehicle (UUV) deployments, maintaining domain awareness across critical chokepoints requires dense, multi-static acoustic sensor networks.

From an engineering and integration perspective, absorbing Ultra Maritime directly into Lockheed Martin RMS bridges a key hardware-to-software gap. While Lockheed Martin dominates airborne (MH-60R, P-8A systems integration) and surface/subsurface combat management systems (Aegis, AN/BYG-1), Ultra Maritime brings vertical ownership of sonobuoys, towed arrays, and acoustic signal processing hardware. Combining Ultra’s acoustic hardware with Lockheed Martin’s edge-computing algorithms and mission systems allows the combined entity to deliver turnkey, end-to-end ASW combat packages—from sonobuoy drop to combat-system fire control—to U.S., NATO, and AUKUS naval forces.
