WASHINGTON — Following operational field evaluations by the 101st Airborne Division and 75th Ranger Regiment, the U.S. Army and SIG Sauer officially showcased the XM8 6.8×51 mm Compact Carbine at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) 2026 Annual Meeting and Exposition.

Derived directly from the M7 Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) rifle, the XM8 was developed to address soldier feedback regarding the M7’s length, weight, and handling during close-quarters and vehicle-mounted operations. Featuring a shortened 279 mm (11 in) barrel, the XM8 is approximately 12% lighter and 89 mm (3.5 in) shorter than the baseline M7, while retaining complete mechanical and logistical compatibility with the 6.8×51 mm hybrid metallic-cased ammunition family and the XM157 Vortex Small Arms Fire Control System. Initial operational fielding to U.S. Army Close Combat Force (CCF) formations is scheduled to begin in December 2026.
