Defense primes General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) and Sweden’s Saab AB have successfully completed a comprehensive flight-test campaign of the LoyalEye Airborne Early Warning (AEW) radar payload integrated aboard the uncrewed MQ-9B aircraft system.

Executed over recent months from GA-ASI’s Desert Horizon flight test facility in Southern California, the flight trials demonstrated the uncrewed platform’s ability to persistently detect, track, and classify simultaneous airborne and maritime surface targets across extended standoff ranges. The joint effort—formally initiated in June 2025 with podded flight trials commencing in May 2026—combines Saab’s sensor miniaturization with the high-endurance MQ-9B baseline (SkyGuardian/SeaGuardian). The resulting uncrewed AEW architecture offers allied forces a persistent, cost-effective air-and-maritime surveillance barrier that expands sensor horizons while preserving high-value crewed Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) assets.

TIMES OF DEFENCE ASSESSMENT

The successful flight testing of Saab’s LoyalEye AEW radar aboard GA-ASI’s MQ-9B solves a growing structural vulnerability facing Western air power: the high acquisition and operating costs of traditional “big wing” crewed AEW&C platforms. Large crewed platforms—such as the Boeing E-7 Wedgetail or E-3 AWACS—are high-value assets with limited fleet numbers, leaving them vulnerable to long-range anti-radiation and hypersonic air-to-air missiles in high-intensity contested theaters.

From an engineering and operational perspective, the MQ-9B LoyalEye integration provides several distinct tactical advantages:
1. **Persistent Stand-Off Screening**: Operating at altitudes up to 40,000 feet with flight endurances exceeding 24 hours, an MQ-9B equipped with LoyalEye can maintain an uninterrupted radar screen over critical maritime chokepoints or contested borders without requiring continuous aerial refueling tankers.
2. **Attritable Air-Defense Horizon Extension**: Deploying low-cost uncrewed AEW screening nodes forward into high-risk Anti-Access/Area-Denial (A2/AD) zones allows militaries to push their radar detection horizons hundreds of kilometers ahead of friendly forces. The MQ-9B acts as a
