As 5th-generation combat aircraft continue to redefine modern aerial warfare, the pilot’s helmet has evolved from a simple piece of protective gear into a highly sophisticated command center. Leading this technological leap for the Turkish aerospace industry is ASELSAN with the TULGAR Helmet-Mounted Display System (HMDS), purpose-built for Turkiye’s indigenous 5th-generation fighter jet, the TAI KAAN.

In 5th-generation aircraft, traditional Head-Up Displays (HUD) are largely eliminated. Instead, critical flight data, sensor feeds, and tactical information are projected directly onto the visor of the pilot’s helmet. The TULGAR system provides KAAN pilots with unparalleled situational awareness, enabling them to “see through” the aircraft’s fuselage using external electro-optical sensors and lock onto enemy targets simply by looking at them.

By developing TULGAR domestically, ASELSAN ensures that the KAAN program remains independent of foreign export controls regarding critical avionics and pilot-machine interface technologies.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS: ASELSAN TULGAR HMDS

  • Visor-Projected HMD: Replaces the traditional HUD by projecting high-resolution, full-color flight data, weapon status, and tactical symbology directly onto the pilot’s visor, regardless of where they turn their head.

  • “See-Through” Capability: Integrates with the aircraft’s 360-degree Distributed Aperture System (DAS) and electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensors, allowing the pilot to look down through the floor of the jet or behind them with unobstructed digital vision.

  • High-Off-Boresight (HOBS) Targeting: Features highly accurate head-tracking technology. The pilot can lock onto airborne or ground targets simply by looking at them, enabling the firing of advanced air-to-air missiles without needing to point the aircraft’s nose at the enemy.

  • Digital Night Vision: Seamlessly transitions between day and night operations with integrated digital night vision, eliminating the need for heavy, clip-on night vision goggles (NVGs).

  • 3D Spatial Audio & Active Noise Reduction: Features 3D directional audio to alert the pilot of the exact direction of incoming threats or communications, paired with Active Noise Reduction (ANR) to mitigate the extreme roar of the twin engines.

  • Custom Ergonomics: Engineered with a custom-molded inner liner tailored to the individual pilot’s head shape, ensuring optimal weight distribution and stability during extreme high-G combat maneuvers.

The TULGAR system represents a critical milestone in Turkiye’s defense electronics sector, providing KAAN pilots with the cognitive dominance required to survive and win in highly contested airspace.
