British-Luxembourg defence prime North Defence Group has released operational updates regarding its next-generation multi-role Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) as the platform readies for rigorous NATO field trials in Switzerland.
Engineered at the company’s Steinsel facility in Luxembourg and produced at its newly opened 50,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Elland, West Yorkshire, the high-payload UGV is scheduled for a full market launch in late winter. Designed to address high-risk “last-mile” tactical logistics, counter-uncrewed aerial systems (C-UAS) air defense, and casualty extraction in contested littoral and forest environments, the design leverages operational lessons learned across 17 frontline technical visits to Ukraine by North Defence CEO Oliver North.

Payload Capacity, Modular Integration & Armored Life-Cell
💥 Payload Transport Capacity: Payload Envelope: >1,000 kg (2,200 lbs) useful load on a modular rear flatbed assembly
💥 Counter-UAS & Armament Options: Direct structural provision to mount Remote Weapon Stations (RWS), Electro-Optical surveillance masts, or the EOS Slinger counter-drone kinetic system
💥 Armored Life-Cell Module: Centralized protected compartment along the wheelbase designed to house high-density battery banks for prolonged silent watch, or function as an armored casualty evacuation (CASEVAC) pod
Navigation Suite, Autonomy & Cyber Hardening
🚀 Driverless Teaming (“Follow-Me”): Tetherless electronic tracking system enabling the UGV to follow dismounted infantry patrols or lead tactical vehicles autonomously
🚀 Waypoint Autonomy & GPS-Denied PNT: GPS-independent Inertial Navigation System (INS) combined with visual odometry to maintain autonomous route navigation during heavy EW jamming
TIMES OF DEFENCE ASSESSMENT
The North Defence UGV’s entry into NATO trials in Switzerland reflects a broader operational transition toward robotic last-mile logistics and frontline survivability.
From an engineering and tactical doctrine perspective, this UGV provides three key capabilities:
1. **Resolving the “Last-Mile” Logistics Bottleneck**: Frontline resupply of ammunition, batteries, and food during high-intensity conflict often exposes personnel to artillery and drone threats. Providing over 1,000 kg of payload capacity on an autonomous platform reduces the need to put troops in harm’s way during frontline resupply runs.
2. **Integrated Counter-UAS and Mobile Air Defense**: Integrating kinetic C-UAS systems (such as the Slinger) onto a small, agile 4WS uncrewed chassis creates a mobile perimeter defense bubble capable of operating alongside infantry units without compromising vehicle maneuverability.
3. **Multi-Drive Architecture for VUCA Environments**: Offering fully electric, diesel, and hybrid drives gives tactical commanders options between low thermal/acoustic signatures for stealth insertions and high-range heavy transport across complex terrain.
