The French Directorate General of Armaments (Direction générale de l’armement – DGA) has formally awarded a contract modification for four additional SAMP/T NG (Sol-Air Moyenne Portée / Terrestre Nouvelle Génération) surface-to-air defense firing units.
Executed via the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) on behalf of the French Ministry of Armed Forces, the procurement was contracted to Eurosam GIE—the joint venture formed by MBDA France, MBDA Italy, and Thales. The additional order expands the French Air and Space Force (Armée de l’Air et de l’Espace) inventory target to 12 operational SAMP/T NG batteries (with 10 scheduled for delivery prior to 2030). Built to operate within a multi-layer engagement architecture, the SAMP/T NG integrates Aster 30 B1 and Aster 30 B1NT (Block 1 New Technology) long-range interceptors alongside MICA VL (Vertical Launch) medium-range effectors. Managed from a single unified engagement module, the integrated battery network provides layered defense against air-breathing targets, maneuvering tactical ballistic missiles (TBMs), and high-speed maneuvering hypersonic strike threats.

TIMES OF DEFENCE ASSESSMENT
The DGA’s decision to expand France’s order of SAMP/T NG systems to 12 firing units underscores Europe’s commitment to building sovereign, indigenous air and missile defense capabilities. In high-intensity combat operations, defense networks must counter complex saturation tactics involving high-volume kamikaze drones, low-flying cruise missiles, and high-altitude ballistic or hypersonic weapons. Relying on a single interceptor layer leads to rapid missile stock depletion when responding to low-tier aerial threats.
From an engineering and operational standpoint, the strength of the SAMP/T NG lies in its unified multi-layer command-and-control architecture and advanced sensor suite. Integrating Thales Kronos AESA 3D radars with the Ka-band active seeker of the Aster 30 B1NT missile allows the system to track and intercept high-speed targets—such as tactical ballistic and maneuvering hypersonic missiles—at ranges exceeding 150 km. Furthermore, incorporating medium-range MICA VL launchers into the same battery control network enables operators to optimize engagement economics, reserving expensive Aster 30 B1NT interceptors for high-tier ballistic threats while using MICA VL missiles against cruise missiles and aircraft.
