WASHINGTON — The U.S. Army and Hanwha Defense USA officially unveiled the XM1776 Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC) on October 12, 2026, during the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Annual Meeting and Exposition. The XM1776—derived from Hanwha’s K9 Mobile Howitzer (K9MH) architecture—is a 155 mm/52-caliber wheeled self-propelled howitzer designed to replace aging M777 towed howitzers in select U.S. Army light and Stryker formations.

The U.S. Army expanded its prototype acquisition agreement from six to nine firm units under a contract valued at up to $262.9 million, with options for nine additional systems. The program addresses urgent tactical survivability requirements illuminated by modern counter-battery radars, persistent uncrewed aerial surveillance, and precision counter-fire. To anchor long-term industrial production and domestic sustainment, Hanwha Defense USA is opening an integration and testing facility in Opelika, Alabama, alongside an “Artillery Industrial Base Coalition” comprising over 70 U.S. suppliers.
