BEIJING — Defense researchers from the Inner Mongolia First Machinery Group (a subsidiary of NORINCO), the State Key Laboratory of Special Vehicle Design and Manufacturing Integration Technology, and the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) have published a peer-reviewed research study detailing a long-term development roadmap for a 60-ton all-electric main battle tank platform. The concept transitions armored vehicle design toward a mobile, high-power pulsed energy microgrid, culminating in a compact liquid-metal nuclear reactor powering a 50-megajoule (MJ) electromagnetic railgun with an operational standoff range of up to 450 kilometers.

The study, funded by a specialized research initiative through the State Key Laboratory, structures land combat power around directed energy, hyper-velocity kinetic strike, and electromagnetic protection. Rather than relying solely on chemical propellants, the three-phase roadmap leverages incremental power storage, pulsed power microgrids, and miniaturized nuclear power generation to drive continuous, high-yield kinetic energy weapon systems and integrated electromagnetic armor suites.
