Paraguay has selected the Cessna 408 SkyCourier to strengthen and modernize the transport capability of the Paraguayan Air Force (FAP), with the acquisition financed through Itaipú Binacional.
The Paraguayan Ministry of National Defense announced the selection on September 23, 2026, following a technical evaluation that considered range, cabin volume, operating costs, versatility, mixed passenger-and-cargo transport capability and logistics support. The government has not yet disclosed the aircraft’s delivery date or the value of the acquisition.
The SkyCourier is expected to support a broad range of missions across Paraguay, including military and logistical transportation, humanitarian assistance and aeromedical evacuation. The Paraguayan government stated that the aircraft offers more than five hours of endurance and approximately 900 nautical miles of range, while its large cabin can be reconfigured for different missions.
A Multi-Mission Transport Aircraft
The Cessna 408 is a high-wing, twin-engine utility turboprop developed by Textron Aviation. Its design emphasizes cargo capacity, passenger transport and operations from relatively short or infrastructure-limited airfields.
According to Textron Aviation’s published specifications, the SkyCourier has a maximum takeoff weight of 19,000 lb (8,618 kg) and is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-65SC engines rated at 1,110 shp (828 kW) each. The aircraft has a maximum cruise speed of approximately 210 knots (389 km/h).
The passenger configuration can accommodate up to 19 passengers, while the freighter version has a maximum payload of approximately 6,700 lb (3,039 kg). Textron lists a maximum range of about 940 nautical miles (1,741 km) for the freighter version under its published conditions.
The aircraft’s cabin is approximately 7.11 meters long and 1.96 meters wide, providing considerable flexibility for a platform of its size. The freighter version can accommodate large cargo loads and is designed around rapid loading and unloading.
Aeromedical and Humanitarian Role
One of the most significant aspects of Paraguay’s selection is the aircraft’s potential role beyond conventional logistics.
The Paraguayan government says the SkyCourier can be configured for aeromedical evacuation with up to four stretchers, allowing the FAP to respond to medical emergencies in remote areas. The aircraft is also intended to support humanitarian operations and establish air links with isolated communities.
Textron Aviation offers the SkyCourier in passenger, freighter and combination configurations, and the company has also promoted the platform for special-mission applications including medical evacuation, utility transport and other government missions.
For Paraguay, this flexibility is particularly relevant because the aircraft can combine personnel and cargo transportation without requiring a specialized fleet for every mission.
Replacing an Aging Transport Fleet
The SkyCourier will enter a Paraguayan Air Force transport fleet currently centered on aging C-212 and Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft.
The FAP’s transport inventory includes C-212 aircraft operated by the Air Transport Group (GTA) and Cessna C208B Grand Caravans operated by the Special Air Transport Group (GATE). These aircraft support domestic logistics and transport missions from the Ñu Guazú area near Asunción.
The arrival of the SkyCourier therefore represents more than the addition of another transport aircraft. It introduces a newer twin-engine platform with substantially greater cabin volume and payload flexibility than the smaller Caravan fleet, while complementing rather than completely replacing the FAP’s existing transport assets.

The exact configuration of the aircraft ordered by Paraguay has not been publicly detailed, so commercial SkyCourier specifications should not automatically be interpreted as the final FAP configuration.
A Practical Capability Upgrade
The SkyCourier does not represent a high-end combat aircraft acquisition. Its importance lies instead in mobility, logistics and national response capacity.
A relatively compact aircraft capable of carrying passengers, cargo or medical equipment can provide the FAP with a flexible platform for disaster response, emergency evacuation, remote-community access and routine military logistics.
The aircraft’s selection also reflects a broader trend toward using relatively simple and commercially derived platforms for military utility missions, where reliability, operating cost and access to established logistics networks can be more important than combat-specific performance.
For Paraguay, the C-408 is therefore best understood as a multi-mission mobility asset rather than a conventional military transport aircraft—one intended to increase the FAP’s ability to move people, supplies and medical teams across a country where access to remote communities can be challenging.
