France has begun fielding the full-capability Jaguar R3, giving its reconnaissance cavalry a significantly stronger stand-off anti-armor capability.
The French Defence Procurement Agency, DGA, announced on September 21 that the first Jaguar R3 reconnaissance and combat vehicles had been delivered to the French Army during the summer.
By September 4, a total of 21 Jaguar R3s had been delivered.
The R3 configuration was qualified as “good for war” on April 8, 2026, and the French Army authorized its operational use on July 20. Existing Jaguars already in service are also being retrofitted to the R3 standard, with the retrofit campaign scheduled to continue through the end of 2027.
The Jaguar R3’s Major Upgrade: MMP
The defining addition is the integration of the French Missile Moyenne Portée (MMP), also known as Akeron MP, developed by MBDA.
The missile gives the Jaguar the ability to engage armored and other high-value targets at ranges of up to 4 kilometers, allowing the vehicle to attack enemy armor without having to enter a direct cannon-versus-cannon engagement.
France’s DGA specifically highlights this capability as a way for the Jaguar to avoid a direct confrontation with an enemy tank while still engaging high-value targets at stand-off range.
The MMP uses an imaging infrared seeker and supports lock-on-before-launch and fire-and-forget employment, while retaining a man-in-the-loop capability. The French Army lists a maximum range of 4,000 meters and a minimum range of 160 meters.
The Jaguar’s MMP integration was progressively qualified. In April 2026, DGA, MBDA and Nexter conducted the first MMP firing from a Jaguar, engaging a static target in a lock-on-before-launch configuration.

The Jaguar combines its 40 mm cannon with the missile system rather than replacing one with the other.
The 40 mm CTA cannon provides rapid direct fire against lighter vehicles, personnel and other battlefield targets, while the MMP provides a longer-range precision anti-armor option.
Built for Reconnaissance — Not Just Tank Hunting
The Jaguar is primarily a reconnaissance and combat vehicle within France’s SCORPION modernization program.
Its mission is to move close to the contact zone, gather intelligence and identify targets while remaining mobile and protected.
The vehicle is equipped with day/night observation systems, laser-warning sensors, missile-launch detection, acoustic detection and electronic protection systems.
Its integration into the SCORPION Combat Information System (SICS) allows it to exchange tactical information in real time with other networked units.
This networked architecture is important because the Jaguar does not necessarily have to discover and engage every target independently.
Information collected by another sensor or combat vehicle can potentially contribute to the wider tactical picture and help commanders coordinate fires.
A New Role for French Reconnaissance Cavalry
The Jaguar is replacing several older French armored platforms, including the AMX-10RC and ERC-90 Sagaie, as well as VAB vehicles previously equipped with HOT anti-tank missiles.
That creates an important change in capability.

The most important tactical effect of the R3 upgrade is not simply the addition of another weapon.
It changes the distance at which the Jaguar can challenge armored targets.
A tank equipped only with a cannon generally needs to close the distance to engage another armored vehicle effectively.
The MMP allows the Jaguar to remain farther away while using a guided missile against an armored target.
This is particularly relevant to the Jaguar’s reconnaissance mission.
The vehicle can potentially detect and classify an enemy armored formation, pass information through the SCORPION network and employ its missile capability without deliberately closing to tank-gun range.
The French Ministry of the Armed Forces explicitly describes the R3’s MMP capability as enabling the Jaguar to avoid a direct “cannon against cannon” confrontation.
R3 Is the Full-Capability Jaguar
The French Army’s transition to R3 is also significant because earlier Jaguar vehicles will not simply be left behind.
France is conducting a retrofit campaign to bring Jaguars already delivered to the R3 standard.
According to DGA, that process is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027.
The result will be a more standardized Jaguar fleet with the complete technical and operational capability of the R3 configuration.

The Jaguar R3 is not a French equivalent of a main battle tank.
It is something different: a networked reconnaissance and combat vehicle designed to see first, share information and engage targets while exploiting mobility and stand-off weapons.
With the integration of the 4-km-class MMP/Akeron MP, the Jaguar now has a substantially stronger anti-armor tool without sacrificing its primary reconnaissance role.

The Jaguar R3 is no longer simply a reconnaissance vehicle with a 40 mm cannon. It is becoming a networked reconnaissance platform with a genuine stand-off anti-armor punch.
