ROVANIEMI, Finland — In a historic milestone for Northern European defense and NATO’s Arctic deterrence, Finland has officially received its first two Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II fighter jets. The aircraft landed at the Lapland Air Wing in Rovaniemi on September 18, 2026, marking the beginning of the domestic phase for Finland’s largest military procurement program.
The arrival of the first jets (designated JF-510 and JF-512) initiates the Finnish Air Force’s transition from its legacy F/A-18C/D Hornet fleet to a highly advanced, 64-aircraft 5th-generation stealth fleet. Flown by U.S. Air Force pilots from Lockheed Martin’s Fort Worth facility, the jets were escorted into Finnish airspace by current Finnish Hornets before touching down. Lapland Air Wing is slated to achieve Initial Operational Capability (IOC) by early 2028, with the entire 64-jet fleet expected to reach Full Operational Capability (FOC) by the end of 2030.
As a new NATO member, Finland’s integration of the F-35 provides the alliance with a critical intelligence and combat node across the Baltic, Arctic, and High North regions. Bolstering its domestic security of supply, Finnish defense company Patria recently completed the local assembly of the first F135 engine in Linnavuori, ensuring that Finland retains sovereign sustainment and maintenance capabilities during potential crises.
