Türkiye’s Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation (MKE) successfully conducted naval live-fire trials of its TOLGA 20 mm Dual Weapon Revolver System during the TURNAs-2026 exercise in late October 2026. Integrated for the first time aboard the B-class corvette TCG Beykoz (F-501), the weapon system engaged and destroyed both Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) across 24 distinct operational scenarios with a reported 100% interception rate.

Following its naval field validation, MKE introduced the system internationally at EURONAVAL 2026 in Paris. In addition to serving as a close-in weapon system (CIWS) for frontline naval combatants, MKE is positioning TOLGA as a specialized point-defense shield for high-value commercial and critical civilian maritime infrastructure—including offshore deepwater drilling ships, seismic survey vessels, cable-laying platforms, and floating power plants (powerships)—against asymmetric kamikaze drone attacks.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS: MKE TOLGA 20MM DUAL REVOLVER WEAPON ARCHITECTURE

Gun Architecture, Kinematics & Mount Mechanics

⚡ OEM & Lead Developer: Machinery and Chemical Industry Corporation (MKE / Ankara, Türkiye)
⚡ Weapon Configuration: Dual 20 mm revolver automatic cannons mounted on a single 4-axis stabilized remote weapon station (RWS)
⚡ Combined Rate of Fire: 3,200 rounds per minute (1,600 RPM per independent cannon unit)
⚡ Ammunition Capacity: 600 total rounds carried on mount (supplied via dual 300-round ammunition containers)
⚡ Fire Selection: Independent or simultaneous dual-cannon burst firing (typically operated in automated 20-round high-density dispersion bursts)
⚡ Kinematic Elevation & Traverse: Elevation envelope from -30° to +70°; high-speed angular traverse rate of ~60°/sec across 4 independent axes (azimuth, elevation, and 2 independent boresight axes)
⚡ Effective Operational Range: Up to 1,000 meters against low-RCS Class 1–3 kamikaze aerial drones and high-speed explosive USVs

Targeting, Sensor Integration & Munition Dynamics

💥 Electro-Optical & Sensor Architecture: Independent sensor housing allows the optical/thermal tracking turret to move independently from the gun mount, enabling continuous dynamic lead-angle computation to the predicted intercept point
💥 Modular C2 / Fire Control Interfacing: Plug-and-play architecture compatible with standalone EO/IR suites, shipboard surveillance radars, and external Electronic Warfare (EW) / C4I networks
💥 Anti-Drone Ammunition Suite: Fires standard 20 mm High Explosive (HE) as well as MKE-developed specialized kinetic fragmentation anti-drone rounds using pre-determined spatial detonation settings to generate high-density shrapnel clouds in the target path

TIMES OF DEFENCE ASSESSMENT

The maritime validation and civilian positioning of the MKE TOLGA system address key tactical vulnerabilities exposed in modern naval theaters.

From a naval defense engineering and maritime security perspective, three key strategic insights emerge:
1. **Closing the Asymmetric Standoff Capability Gap for Commercial Ships**: The proliferation of low-cost aerial suicide drones and explosive USVs in contested choke points (e.g., Red Sea, Black Sea) has exposed unarmed commercial platforms to devastating asymmetric strikes. Adapting a high-rate-of-fire RWS like TOLGA allows civilian operators and energy primes to deploy modular, self-contained kinetic defenses on vulnerable platforms without requiring full naval CIWS integration.
2. **Kinematic Advantage of Independent Optical Tracking**: Standard legacy naval mounts link the optical sensor directly to the gun barrel’s axis, forcing the camera to vibrate and shift during high-rate bursts. TOLGA’s 4-axis architecture decouples the EO sensor suite from the recoil axis, maintaining clear, uninterrupted target tracking and real-time impact assessment during high-intensity 3,200 RPM firings.
3. **Optimized Cost-Per-Engagement via Specialized Fragmentation**: Firing expensive naval SAMs (e.g., RAM, ESSM) to destroy cheap quadcopters or improvised surface drones is economically unfeasible and rapidly depletes shipboard magazine capacity. Utilizing 20 mm specialized fragmentation bursts at a 1,000-meter threshold provides a cost-effective, high-density kinetic curtain to defeat incoming swarm vectors before impact.
